4:51PM

89 mins: Crystal Palace 2 Sheffield United 0

There will be four minutes added. Don’t feel that you have to stick around for all of them. Fleck into the book for a foul on lovely man Andros T.

4:46PM

85 mins: Crystal Palace 2 Sheffield United 0

Zaha with a break. Has the composure to check back and pick out Andros Townsend. He shoots, hits the target. Egan blocks it behind for a corner. That is dealt with.

4:44PM

82 mins: Crystal Palace 2 Sheffield United 0

Palace are absolutely determined though. Corner for Sheffield United but defended with precision and heart.

4:41PM

78 mins: Crystal Palace 2 Sheffield United 0

Alan Smith: “Nobody is chucking it in for Sheffield United, nobody has given up as you might see with some clubs. But as you can see today, the problem is the lack of quality going forward,” he says, concluding that said lack of quality is ultimately an insurmountable issue.

4:38PM

76 mins: Crystal Palace 2 Sheffield United 0

CP have a corner but that is well gathered by the Blades keeper.

4:37PM

75 mins: Crystal Palace 2 Sheffield United 0

Palace’s level has dropped a bit. Decent corner for SU, and it’s played in dangerously at the near post by Norwood. Not enough pressure on the ball.

4:34PM

72 mins: Crystal Palace 2 Sheffield United 0

McArthur with some excellent anticipation to snaffle the ball, and he tries a pass through to Zaha that only just misses its aim.

4:33PM

70 mins: Crystal Palace 2 Sheffield United 0

United bringing a bit of pressure here. Corners. Fleck with an effort. But Palace looking pretty solid.

4:28PM

66 mins: Crystal Palace 2 Sheffield United 0

Eze adds a yellow card to his goal. Won the ball fair and square from Ampadu, but with his studs up.

4:24PM

62 mins: Crystal Palace 2 Sheffield United 0

Norwood goes into the ref’s little book.

4:22PM

60 mins: Crystal Palace 2 Sheffield United 0

Sheff toiling hard and trying their best but they look a very limited outfit. I’d like to read about what’s changed from last season. In fact, a search brings up this fine piece from Mike

Why nothing has gone right for Sheffield United this season

4:18PM

55 mins: Crystal Palace 2 Sheffield United 0

Palace are surely gonna win the day but it is going to be a Pyrrhic victory at this rate – Zaha is now also down and looks hurt!

He is eventually able to get up but Palace will be keeping an eye on him.

4:13PM

51 mins: Crystal Palace 2 Sheffield United 0

Fleck brings down Townsend, giving Palace a chance to sling it in with the freekick. Cleared okay.

4:10PM

48 mins: Crystal Palace 2 Sheffield United 0

Benteke got a dead leg in the first half, according to Sky and hasn’t recovered. Oh well, doesn’t sound too serious long term.

4:09PM

47 mins: Crystal Palace 2 Sheffield United 0

Worries for Palace as though as their integral forward Benteke goes down and stays down. He’s sitting on the turf looking in some pain. Gets up and limps off. Muscle injury?

Benteke is indeed coming off. Ayew is coming on.

4:07PM

46 mins: Crystal Palace 2 Sheffield United 0

United are on course to be winless after their first 17 games, only the third side in history to ‘achieve’ that feat.

Here comes the second half.

4:06PM

Chris Wilder

was unhappy because that five minutes stoppage time seemed to be up when Eze scored the second.

3:53PM

Half time: Crystal Palace 2 Sheffield United 0

Not been a game to write home about, but that goal from Eze was a peach. That would grace any football match every played. Lovely, gliding elegant run and then serious composure to finish it. Wilder is fuming that they didnt get a tackle in but I think Eze was just too good, too slippery and quick. Wonderful stuff.

3:52PM

GOAL! Crystal Palace 2 Sheffield United 0 (Eze 45+ mins)

That is a sensational goal!! Eze picks it up on the left, inside his own half. He controls it nicely, and beats Norwood. He sets off on a mazy run, beats another man and slots it in the corner with his right from the edge of the box. What a goal.

3:47PM

45+ mins: Crystal Palace 1 Sheffield United 0

From the ensuing freekick – there are 5 minutes added on by the way – Zaha himself gets up well and heads, but at the keeper.

3:46PM

45 mins: Crystal Palace 1 Sheffield United 0

Good little spell for SUFC but the hosts break now in the formidable form of Zaha. He carries the ball a long way down the left, tracked by Bogle, who eventually decides he’d better hack him down. And hack him down he does. That’s a booking.

3:44PM

43 mins: Crystal Palace 1 Sheffield United 0

That is United’s best moment and it comes as Ampadu sends his teammate Bogle through with a cute ball. Arriving at pace in the inside right channel he meets the ball with a thumping shot. Goalie is equal to it.

3:41PM

40 mins: Crystal Palace 1 Sheffield United 0

This is poor fare to be honest. Game not holding the attention and there is very little action or excitement to relay to you. Palace doing a solid job.

3:40PM

37 mins: Crystal Palace 1 Sheffield United 0

Eberechi Eze is coming on for Schlupp, who would appear to have conked his right knee or hamstring.

3:37PM

35 mins: Crystal Palace 1 Sheffield United 0

McGoldrick surges forward but loses it.

Shame, bad news for Palace: their goalscorer Schlupp has picked up an injury. Looks like he is coming off.

3:35PM

32 mins: Crystal Palace 1 Sheffield United 0

Mauricio Pochettino has got that PSG job by the way. Guess Ole’s upturn in fortunes meant that Poch didn’t think it was worth hanging on for MUFC.

3:32PM

30 mins: Crystal Palace 1 Sheffield United 0

Here is Zaha, drives to the byline on the left and he crosses to Benteke who, under big pressure, bundles wide.

3:27PM

25 mins: Crystal Palace 1 Sheffield United 0

Zaha and Stephens battle for the ball. The Blades man is correctly ruled to have hauled him down. Palace have a freekick on the edge of the box, just by the byline on the right. It’s nodded back across, nicely worked freekick, Benteke is putting it about, but has overdone the about-putting and the ref blows for a foul.

3:24PM

22 mins: Crystal Palace 1 Sheffield United 0

United hold firm and hold their shape to repel a good attack by Zaha and Benteke, who were linking up well.

3:23PM

20 mins: Crystal Palace 1 Sheffield United 0

Game being well contested but not a lot of the aul football on show.

3:20PM

17 mins: Crystal Palace 1 Sheffield United 0

United have a corner, Benteke back for some defensive aid. Sheffield United doing pretty well, plenty of the ball and attacking. Yet to fashion an opening.

3:14PM

12 mins: Crystal Palace 1 Sheffield United 0

Sheffield United have rallied well after that setback of the goal. Mousset is okay to carry on. He and his fellows have got Palace well pinned back the last few minutes.

3:09PM

7 mins: Crystal Palace 1 Sheffield United 0

Sheffield United’s problems worsen with forward Lys Mousset getting a knock in a fair and square battle with Palace keeper.

3:06PM

GOAL! Crystal Palace 1 Sheffield United 0 (Schlupp 4)

Zaha races down the left and gets his head up, picks out  Benteke with a neat little ball inside. Lovely touch from Benteke to the arriving Jeffrey Schluppand he cracks the ball home. Nice goal – and very Palace.

3:04PM

3 mins: Crystal Palace 0 Sheffield United 0

Palace without a win in five PL games.

3:02PM

2 mins: Crystal Palace 0 Sheffield United 0

Andros Townsend makes some good progress down the left for Palace.

3:01PM

1 mins: Crystal Palace 0 Sheffield United 0

The players take a knee, Sheffield United kick off.

3:00PM

Sheffield United

Right then

Leeds battled hard and played with loads of energy but will travel back from London to Yorkshire with nowt. Can Sheffield United do any better, against Palace this afternoon? Kick off is at 3pm.

1:25PM

Good afternoon

Hope you’re having a restful start to the New Year. We’ve had one enjoyable football match already today, Leeds travelling to Spurs, and there has been plenty of news as well. Three Spurs players and Hammer have got themselves into hot water for having a party, and the EFL has said it is going to introduce twice-weekly testing.

Anyway, returning to Actual Football, this is our live blog of Crystal Palace’s home fixture against Sheffield United. Poor old Sheffield are flat bottom, with just two points to their name so far. Palace are in 16th place with 19 points, probably a slightly better team than that position suggests, but in this League you can move up pretty quickly. Indeed, only one side looks totally out of its depth and that is, erm, Sheffield United. A strange one, given that they seemed to do pretty well last season.

They’ve recently been battered by Liverpool and Villa, shipping ten in the process. You’d think that Sheffield United at home couldn’t come soon enough for Roy’s boys. Obviously all of the right noises will be made about respect and a dangerous opponent but c’mon. At home against a team with two points by New Years, you’d have to fancy it.

We will get to the team news shortly. In fact, very shortly!

Crystal Palace: Guaita, Ward, Tomkins, Kouyate, Mitchell, Townsend, Milivojevic, McArthur, Schlupp, Zaha, Benteke. Subs: Butland, van Aanholt, Dann, Ayew, Sakho, McCarthy, Batshuayi, Eze, Riedewald.

Sheff Utd: Ramsdale, Basham, Egan, Stevens, Bogle, Norwood, Ampadu, Fleck, Osborn, McGoldrick, Mousset. Subs: Baldock, Lowe, Verrips, Brewster, Bryan, Hackford.

Referee: Stuart Attwell (Warwickshire)
