- Liverpool vs Chelsea kicks off at 8:15pm on Sky Sports
3 mins – Liverpool 0 Chelsea 0
Tentative start from both teams. Liverpool passing patiently out from the back, slow tempo.
Olivier Giroud hasn’t made it into the team, as has been the case throughout his career even though he scores so many goals, for tactical reasons. Timo Werner starts upfront tonight specifically to target Liverpool’s high line. This isn’t my analysis either, Tuchel has just said it in his pre-match interview.
Tuchel and Klopp are actually quite different
I did a big bit of analysis on these two managers for a piece this week, which is shunted halfway down this other excellent piece by Chris Bascombe:
Matt Law has had a look at some of the issues the new Chelsea boss needs to address if they are to challenge at the very top of the Premier League next season.
The gegenpress derby?
Here’s a pre-match deep dive on Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel. They’re both German, and both managed Mainz and Borussia Dortmund before taking charge of a Premier League giant. But here’s why they aren’t as similar as their shared histories – and reputations – suggest.
Chelsea team news
By all accounts Liverpool were in the hunt for Timo Werner’s signature in the summer. He leads the line for Chelsea tonight and will be hoping for a bit more luck in front of goal.
Liverpool vs Chelsea
It’s Liverpool vs Chelsea, the Big Game on this Thursday. Have you had a nice Thursday? It’s about to get better! Football. MORE FOOTBALL THE FOOTBALL WILL NEVER END NEVER EVER EVER and tonight is another Premier League spectacular.
The tactical preview of this is:
Chelsea will have loads of the ball but struggle to create anything. Liverpool will attack powerfully directly through the middle of them. I have no idea what the score will be. Is that good enough, Liverpool fans? There’s this sort of odd narrative that’s started regarding Jurgen Klopp and the idea that maybe the club is thinking of replacing him. Kenny Dalglish, rightly, says that’s nonsense.
“A tape is not long enough to measure what belief we have in Jurgen,” he said on Sky Sports News.
“He has been fantastic for the football club. This is the time, after it had all been going so well, when he really needs people around him.
“He’s got things in perspective. When he was getting success he was sharing it with everybody else, cuddling the players and waving to the crowd. He never got carried away.
“We are where we are. We’ve just got to get on with it and try to finish as high [in the Premier League] and be as successful as we can in the Champions League.
“It’s a huge game for both team. They’re both chasing the same goal, to try and get in the top four and the Champions League.
“Given a bit of time, we’ll be back in the frame. We’re coming back off a good result at Sheffield United.
“We’ll keep our fingers crossed. They know what they’re in for, I’m sure they’ll be well up for the fight.”
Kick off is 8:15pm, stay with us for live updates throughout!
