Breaking Spurs news
From Ben Rumsby.
Tottenham Hotspur trio Erik Lamela, Giovani Lo Celso and Sergio Reguilón and West Ham United’s Manuel Lanzini held an illegal Christmas gathering, it has emerged.
A photograph has been circulated on social media showing the quartet and some of their friends and family breaking coronavirus laws and Premier League rules.
Lamela, Lo Celso and Reguilón were facing disciplinary action from Spurs, who said in a statement: “We are extremely disappointed and strongly condemn this image showing some of our players with family and friends together at Christmas particularly as we know the sacrifices everybody around the country made to stay safe over the festive period.
“The rules are clear, there are no exceptions, and we regularly remind all our players and staff about the latest protocols and their responsibilities to adhere and set an example. The matter will be dealt with internally.”
A West Ham United spokesperson added: “The club has set the highest possible standards with its protocols and measures relating to Covid-19 so we are disappointed to learn of Manuel Lanzini’s actions. The matter has been dealt with internally and Manuel has been strongly reminded of his responsibilities.”
Telegraph Sport has been told Lanzini has returned a negative coronavirus test since the photograph was taken.
The Metropolitan Police has also been contacted for comment.

So then: Tottenham had their last fixture, against Fulham, postponed just three hours before kick off due, of course, to Covid. Jose Mourinho was not a happy bunny. They were to have played Fulham on Wednesday but were angry that they were not kept more in the loop, and you have to say that you can sympathise. He took to Insta to show footage of him and his players at the Spurs training ground at 2pm saying: “Match at 6pm… We still don’t know if we play. Best league in the world.” Ha. Good point well made.
Talking of cancellations, Spurs were going to play Marine in the FA Cup but that will now be behind closed doors, a devastating blow for the minnows. They are launching an appeal. The Fulham cancellation means that Spurs have more games to cram in later, as well as having expended all that energy preparing for a fixture that never happened. The sole bright spot I guess is that it gives Gareth Bale a little bit more recovery time from an injury.
Leeds, meanwhile, have been one of the stories of the last few days. The club took exception to comments about them by Amazon Prime Sport pundit Karen Carney and took the unusual step of tweeting out a mobile phone clip of them to their near-quarter of a million Twitter followers. Literally nobody at Leeds can possibly have been expected to predict that this would then lead to lots of Leeds supporters abusing Carney, some of them resorting to sexist and unpleasant personal attacks. There was absolutely no way they could have seen that coming. Carney has since deleted her Twitter account.
We will have the team news at 11.30am for this one, as I say. It’s on BT Sport but if you don’t have that, you can still enjoy all the news, updates, goals and live action by following along on this here live blog.
